Known as the gem trading center since
the 15th century, Chanthaburi has attracted a wide ethnic mix of
people, a majority
being Vietnamese refugees. It is another major eastern seaside province
which has, played an important role in the history of the nation,
both before and during the Rattanakosin (Bangkok) Period. It is
wealthy and rich in natural resources, particularly gems, products
from the sea, and tropical fruits, including Rambutans, Durians,
Mangosteens and Langsads. It is also endowed with numerous national
parks.
