Laem Set Inn

Laem Set Inn is an owner-managed boutique beach hotel and restaurant on the island of Koh Samui in the Gulf of Thailand near the Southern Thai city of Surat Thani. We have a wide range of accommodation ranging from rustic thatched bungalows to elegant rooms, studio suites and luxurious villas with private swimming pools and Jacuzzis ensuring a relaxing holiday in a style to suit you.

The Inn is on a large beachfront property and will delight everyone of fine taste, be you a romantic couple or a family. This is not only a paradise for children but we also have very private honeymoon suite for that special occasion. Gourmet cuisine, quality personal service, an in-house spa, health & fitness center ensure a successful Asian- Koh Samui vacation for all.

Laem Set, established in 1982, was one of the first hotels on the island. At that time there were only a dozen or so, and while this number has mushroomed to 200+, if one counts both small bungalows and big hotels, Laem Set is the only establishment maintaining the original style of Samui, but placing it in a context of fine service and world-renowned cuisine. We still have thatched seafront bungalows, and our suites are all old teak houses, dismantled and reassembled here, with interior redesign to a most comfortable and elegant standard.

Laem Set, with only 25 rooms, is completely isolated from the commercial developments on the big tourist beaches and is an ideal choice for those seeking a romantic and intimate atmosphere.

Accommodations

The bungalows are very rustic and suit those looking for a non-standard experience. The original Bungalow Village is completely unique, preserving, as it does, the style and atmosphere of Samui as it used to be, but offering this in the context of quality and service for which the Inn is world renowned.

Types of Rooms

Bungalows : Although small the thatched cottages with woven bamboo walls, (see next picture), have bathrooms with Western-style toilets, hot water, telephones, digital electronic safes, mini bars, tea / coffee facilities and are designed with couples in mind.

They have one double bed downstairs, (which occupies most of the floor area), and a further single mattress in a tiny attic room which makes them serviceable for two friends traveling together but not being on double bed terms, (one child aged 6 to 12 will fit up there too but if there are also two adults downstairs then the room is too small to be convenient -- it only works if one child accompanies one adult. Children under 6 cannot be accommodated in the bungalows). Usually people use the attic to store their bags and, perhaps, to lie down during the day and gaze out of the little upstairs window, thus getting an elevated view along the beach.

With these rooms we try to realise the tropical island fantasy of a thatched cottage on the beach, beneath the stars. The construction is so rustic & open that they give the feeling of being almost camped on the beach. They are fan-cooled and one sleeps under a mosquito net. This is their charm for some, but for others they may not be suitable.

Bungalow Suite : These were originally two adjoining bungalows which have been converted to a thatched "suite" with air-conditioning, (they are also screened and have ceiling fans -- the choice is yours). The two bungalows, now joined together into one have a main bedroom with ensuite bathroom, a lounge with another bathroom leading off from it and capability to sleep an extra couple.

There are a further two small attic rooms capable of accommodating two children aged 5 - 7 or one older child each. The recommended occupancy is thus two adults and up to four children with the option of adding a maid/nanny or in-law. Two families who are really good friends, each with two children, can squeeze in together but at that point you might like to look at one of the larger suites.

Standard Rooms : For those who would like something more conventional than a bungalow and less elaborate than a suite, we have a few standard rooms. With a choice of air condition or fan, there are four rooms under a single roof in a replica of a big Southern Thai house, set 10 meters from the seafront, (this is the minimum distance to comply with building codes here).

There are a further four in semi-detached style, i.e. two rooms under a single roof, set back about 30 meters from the sea, but with no buildings between them and it. These have sliding partitions and can be very flexible and suitable for families. Our newest and most elegant standard rooms are in The Lotus Pond House

Studio Suite : All suites at Laem Set Inn are old Southern Thai wooden houses, dismantled and faithfully reconstructed here. Each has a name taken after the village or area from which it was moved. They are comfortable and elegant and are broadly similar in size and specification. Each has an open-plan main bedroom / lounge, which flows onto the balcony, and a further small bedroom with a set of bunk beds. They are thus eminently suitable for couples or families and are mostly situated in slightly elevated positions, quiet with lovely views and yet only meters from the beach.

Children's room has one set of full-size bunk beds capable of sleeping adolescents or even adults . See page "HuaThanon suite" for a view of a similar children's room, (but that larger suite has two FULL-SIZE bunk beds).

Honeymoon Suite : The "Lipa-Noi" suite or the Honeymoon suite is in the studio suite style but it is the most remotely located house on the premises and is the only one not to have a separate children's room. The entire interior is open-plan and flows onto balconies in front and to the sunset-side where there is a little tub to cool oneself while sipping a cocktail. This suite is very popular and often books months in advance. It received an extensive renovation in 2000 which includes a hugely expanded balcony to take full advantage of the panoramic views.

Ma-ret Suite : Re-opened Dec 15th 2000 following total refurbishment including complete new interior, new bathrooms, improved access to attic room, a much more elegant upstairs lounge, new cement / tile swimming pool to replace old fibre-glass one, private Jacuzzi in elevated position amongst dramatic rock formation, private massage pavilion and private sauna.

There was an old woman who lived in a shoe. She had so many children she didn't know what to do", -- then she discovered the Ma-ret suite! This is our highest capacity house and was the first one we reconstructed at the Inn. It was moved from a nearby village and re-sited alone on its own sandy cove just ten metres from the beach. It has two ensuite bedrooms with double beds and a huge attic with fabric dividing partitions which enable it to be used as a "dormitory" for an extra couple or up to eight children. Intercom-style baby alarms link both main bedrooms to the attic room.

If the suite is occupied by a smaller group then the upstairs "dormitory" arrangement is replaced by comfortable furniture and it becomes a cool and elegant lounge with dramatic and panoramic views. All three rooms are air-conditioned.

Below, bordered by rocks in a cool, almost cave-like atmosphere, is a day-lounge with beach furniture and showers. With its own swimming pool right in front this unique house and setting is ideal for a large family, (two families together, along with nanny?), or a small group of good friends. Its recent comprehensive refurbishment takes it from one of our older and less elegant suites, (considered value because of it's high-capacity), to one of our MOST elegant and one which acts as a private spa, The services listed in the section "spa" are available in private at this suite. The staff will come and administer massage, treatments etc. in your own private facilities.

Hua Thanon Suite : This house was taken from the local village of "Hua Thanon" and rebuilt here in the direct centre of and right on the beach. Two ensuite bedrooms, both with beautiful ensuite bathrooms, and a further "bunk room" to the rear with two sets of bunk beds, (four children, room accessed from both main bedrooms), make this lovely house equally suited to a single family, (bring the in-laws), two couples or even two families of good friends. It has a small entrance lounge, big covered balcony and each main bedroom leads out onto its own private balcony via sliding glass doors. The view is right out along the beach to the dramatic sculptural rock formation on the point.

Koh Tan Suite : This old rosewood house was found on the nearby island of "Koh-Tan". It was built by the master carpenter who constructed all the other wooden houses on that island, a first generation immigrant from Southern China. It was dismantled and reassembled here. This magnificent craftsman's residence has been internally redesigned and is an experience in elegance. A breathtaking entrance atrium leads onto a beautifully furnished lounge with full-length balcony offering stunning views over the Southern Isles to the mainland 30 miles away. It has two main ensuite bedrooms with Jacuzzi in master.

We have found, over the years that the elegance of this lovely house has been partly spoiled when children are sleeping in the lounge so the extension was added to the rear in 2000. It has two sets of bunk beds downstairs and a flexible upstairs for younger children in which can be placed cots or mattresses as required. This extension has its own separate bathroom making a total of three bathrooms in this suite.

A private swimming pool built into an elevated promontory directly in front of the suite, its isolation from all other rooms and our quality room service make this fine house particularly suitable for persons requiring absolute privacy.

Restaurant

Our restaurant - Thai Thani Restaurant -- Venue for our original cuisine This large, open "sala" bordering the sea and the pool is made from four old Thai wooden houses dismantled and reassembled here in this new form. On the very far side of the pool in this picture (right), in the area by the rocks and bordering the sea, are half a dozen tables wired to the waiters' area by call-buttons. You can ask to dine here and you will be left in complete privacy under the stars. The waiters will attend you to refresh your drinks or change courses when you summon them.

In addition to your restaurant there is an open-air dining facility in front of the library. There is a large gas barbecue and broad steps cascade down from here to the beach. You can ask to dine here and barbecue your own semi-pre-prepared food. It is also eminently suitable for small private parties. We often use it when twp families who have become friends here would like to dine together.

Swimming Pool

The hotel has one main pool directly in front of the restaurant. Several of the old Thailand style wooden villas the have private pools and there is a bubble-pool right on the beach which is nice for parents with small children.

Bubble Pool.

Nice for cocktails or for parents with small children. This must be one of the best-sited Jacuzzis on Koh Samui!

Laem Set Spa Massage & Beauty Centre

For Centuries massage has been used to assist in the healing of many common ailments. In Thailand today it is still often used for this purpose but is mainly used
as a form of stress reduction.

Traditional Thai Massage Passed down from generation to generation this ancient art uses the techniques of Acupressure & Stretching to mobilise the limbs leaving you totally revived! No oils are used.

Fitness Centre

Since the Inn is a very spacious outdoor facility the necessity for a "fitness centre" as such and as found in city hotels seems less of a priority here. Mountain bikes, kayaks, swimming pools and good jogging roads with very little traffic offer healthy exercise without the contrived feel that a big room full of white machines gives. This said we appreciate that, once on an exercise program, one may wish to continue in the style to which one is used. We have graded free-weights in both hand and bench press styles and one of those white multi-muscle pulling Spanish Inquisition machines too! These are in an airy, shaded outdoor location where one can hear the singing of the birds rather than the humming of ventilation systems. There is plenty of scope to keep fit and exercised here.

Laem Set Inn Library

The Laem Set Inn library has books about the local flora & fauna and more general reference works, -- dictionaries, atlases, etc. An entertainment section and a Non-English language section, - a wide selection in German, French, Dutch, Scandinavian languages, Italian and Japanese.

Water Activities

The kayaks, with their shallow draft are ideal to slip along inside the reef, down the coast. Their silent movement doesn't disturb wildlife. Combine this for upper body exercise with the mountain bikes for lower body exercise and you have a very enjoyable way of taking a daily workout!

We have a dozen single-seaters, one sit-in double seater one unsinkable sit-on double seater and one three-seater for families. The pedal boats have a small glass-bottom panel to enable non-snorkelers to observe the reef. They also have built-in ice boxes and can thus be provisioned for a picnic. The South Coast of Samui has many shallow, sheltered, deserted coves within a few hundred metres of Laem Set Inn. One can paddle to these and believe that the nearest civilization was a thousand miles away. The boat's bimini-top provides shade, there are life jackets in all sizes and the boat is foam-filled and unsinkable making this a very safe family craft.

Offshore Rafting
F
rom about mid -April until late October our steel pontoon, 10 metres long 4 metres wide, is moored in the deepwater past the reef. One can reach this by swimming, snorkeling, pedal boating or kayaking. It has a shaded area and an area exposed to the sun. In the middle, by the feet of the people in this shot, there is a "moonpool" and a ladder allowing one to enter the water between the hulls and swim in the shade.

It is brought in for annual maintenance over the winter season when the sea is often rougher.

Sailing
T
he line-up of small vessels at Laem Set Inn varies and changes over the months and years. We try to always have at least one sailing option. At one time it was a" Hobbie-Cat", but when that collapsed under the strain of use by multiple helmsmen it was replaced with the more robust "LASER"

Mountain Bikes

We have a fleet of mountain bikes, in adult and children's sizes which enable guests to reach the round-island bus stop, or, more pleasurably, to explore the lesser traveled paths & trails of the South Coast of Samui, the only part of the island unscathed by commercial tourism. We have special maps showing low-key points of interest and beauty unvisited by the hoards. Little local restaurants, recommended for lunch and places to refuel with a beer are marked.

Bird Watching

The South coast is predominantly dry and undeveloped. The wildness of the area gives good cover for birds and other interesting wildlife but there is very little in the way of bodies of freshwater so the multiple lotus ponds at Laem Set Inn along with the fact that we maintain an untouched "wilderness" corner of the property mean that several species of birds live and visit here. We actively protect their habitats, taking their nesting seasons into account when planning pruning of trees & bushes and we prohibit staff and contract workers from trapping them, shooting them with slingshots or in any other way molesting them.

Although we have not sighted any superbly rare specimens (there is a colony of roseate terns on a nearby reef which are rare in Thailand, if not worldwide), there are lots of very beautiful and tuneful tropical birds here. The electric blue flash of the kingfisher is a daily sight as it scavenges the tide-pool and the sunbirds and flower-peckers are everywhere. A sea-eagle passes by quite regularly. There are books on the subjects of birds, native mammals and local flora in the library and many of the suites have a pair of binoculars as part of the inventory. The astronomical telescope can be set-up for really close observation of nests.

Children's Paradise

We in have two supervised playgrounds, one with a rubberised floor and secure surrounding wall for toddlers and one for older children. A child-minding service is available. There is a glass-bottom pedal boat with bimini-top and the workers will erect a big umbrella in the shallow water on the beach for your family to play under. The mountain-bikes are also in children's sizes and there is a special little pool with bubbles for parent and baby.

This is a children's paradise but it is also a very BIG property where they can run freely without disturbing other guests. We take care over school vacation times to place families at one end of the property while putting couples and singles in other areas. There is a separate barbecue dining facility for couples who prefer to be alone at supper-time.

Cookery Class

Residential Thai cookery courses can also be organized at the Inn in custom-designed training kitchens in cooperation with "Tasting Places" a London - based specialist company but we can sometimes offer ad hoc half day or one day courses for our guests. If a cookery course is an essential ingredient in your stay however you should check first to ensure that this will be possible at the time of your visit.
