Inspired by the great Srivijaya Empire, which flourished along the shores and among the islands of Southeast Asia a few centuries ago, the resort is a haven of ease and tranquility. Here, on idyllic Samui Island, The Briza recaptures the spirit of Srivijaya, the lightness and grace of its art, the security and serenity that springs from a civilization moulded by the gentle Buddhist faith. This heritage of a rich and glorious culture is complemented by the splendour of nature. Set against a lush backdrop of palms and forested hills are Samui superb white sandy beaches and quiet coves bathed by the clear waters of the Gulf of Thailand. All is a wondrous celebration of the exotic. On the Indonesian island of Sumatra, directly to the west of the city of Palembang, are ruins and artifacts that appear to date back to the Kingdom of Srivijaya. Indications are strong that the Palembang region of south Sumatra formed the heartland of the kingdom. Srivijaya (Sri Vijaya) as a kingdom developed around 500 CE, although it possibly had roots going back as far as 200 CE. In Chinese contemporary writings, the kingdom is referred to as Sribhoja. "Jaya" as a root means "excellence". Srivijaya influence waned in the 11th century. Sumatra was then subject to conquests from Javanese kingdoms: the Singhasari and then the Majapahit. The last vestiges of Srivijaya as a national entity were gone by 1400. Through much of its history, the kingdom was a group of coastal and maritime entities, under the control of the seat at Palembang, similar to Phoenicia in its heyday.

Designed in a contemporary recreation of Srivijaya style, accommodation at the briza comprises exquisite villas that afford the luxury of sheer space and the comfort of amenities blending the traditional with the sophisticated.
The choice of accommodation ranges from Pool Access Villas, each of 140 square metres, to Beachfront Villas with large private pools, of 200 square metres. All have dressing area with bath tub and a separate shower room. Each villa further provides a spacious private terrace, ideal spots for in-room spa treatments, while natural materials are widely featured to create an ambience in harmony with the surroundings. Amenities include individually-controlled air conditioning, refrigerator with mini-bar, tea/coffee maker, in-room safe, satellite television, hair dryer, IDD phone, DVD player and Internet port. |
